We had a Whale-y great time at AquaCamps this week!
Monday
Camp 1& 2 – started off the week with an otter-ly fun dive into kelp forest ecosystems with games like “urchin-otter-kelp” and then crafting their own sea otters
Camp 3&4 – had a fish-tastic experience role playing the salmon life cycle with a relay and crafting their own fish
Camp 5 – started off the week with a splash, exploring the wonders of whales and dolphins before getting their scientific and creative minds flowing by testing their own investigations with our sea urchins in the “art of experimental design” and the scientific method.
Camp 6&7 – what better way to start the week then an exploration of Canada’s Arctic! Campers discovered unique adaptations of walrus and sea otters that keep them warm in the chilly North.
Everyone enjoyed an intertidal exploration down at the beach discovering where crabs, clams, kelp and many more living things just below the waves
Tuesday
Camp 1& 2 – Visited our Jelly research lab behind the scenes
Camp 3&4 – Got up close with local invertebrates like sea cucumbers and anemones in our Wet Lab
Camp 5 – Dissected squid, discovering what makes these animals unique and an important food resource to so many animals and got up close with sea cucumbers and anemones in our Wet Lab
Camp 6&7 – Experienced how we raise fish from egg to adult in our behind the scenes fish lab
Wednesday
Camp 1& 2 – Dissected a herring, discovering what makes these animals unique and an important food resource in Howe Sound
Camp 3&4 – Dissected squid, discovering what makes these animals unique and an important food resource to so many animals
Camp 5 – Experienced how we raise fish from egg to adult in our behind the scenes fish lab and learned about how much food a sea otter eats in just one day during our Sea Otter feed program.

Fun-day Friday!
Camp 1& 2 – Practiced whale communication – echolocation! Learned about sea lion care at our Steller Sea Lion trainer session
Camp 3&4 – – Dissected herring, discovering what makes these animals unique and an important food resource in Howe Sound
Camp 5 – Connected live through video conference to OSEARCH researchers. Took a closer look at life to small for the naked eye with a microscope exploration.
Camp 6&7 – Connected live through video conference to OSEARCH researchers before getting their scientific and creative minds flowing by testing their own investigations with our sea urchins in the “art of experimental design” and the scientific method.
