Our Ocean Plastics program focuses in on one particular issue that is universal in our oceans today, debris and micro plastics. Each piece of plastic has a unique story of creation, transportation, use and disposal. We begin with a schoolyard clean up (with several or only one class), older students will sort and record items found (sending data to Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup to be a part of their national database). Groups must find a way to present the data they have i.e. bar graph, pie chart then develop an action plan for their school to reduce the amount of waste generated. Younger grades will build a shoreline in their classroom/multipurpose room or discuss the life cycle of the debris they found (through writing or drawing). All grades will have the opportunity to touch some of our marine invertebrates and to learn about the ecosystem in which they live. All classes are challenged to make a change personally, with their classmates, or as an entire school to reduce the amount of waste they produce.
