Intertidal Marine Biology:

This program explores four important marine invertebrate phyla: Cnidaria, Mollusca, Arthropoda and Echinodermata. Beginning with an introduction to phylogeny, students have the opportunity to meet live intertidal animals. During the program, the phyla come to life through a combination of artifacts, squid dissection and live coastal marine invertebrates. Students have the opportunity to touch our most hardy live animals and all of our artifacts.

To conclude, the group discusses challenges these animals and our oceans are facing and brain storm to find direct actions we can take to help affect change including the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup and Ocean Wise Sustainable Seafood.

Art of Experimental Design:

This program focuses on the scientific method and allows students to identify and practice the skills needed to design and complete an experiment. The class will be able to study living animals and observe their behaviour in response to various stimuli, like food, habitat, or changes in light.

Students will practice asking questions about their observations and imagine ways that they can investigate their own inquiries based on the resources provided. After the experiment is complete, students will present their findings and discuss some of the challenges that scientists face when studying live animals.

Finally, Ocean Wise Educators will introduce some of the research that is taking place at the Vancouver Aquarium and offsite, like the marine mammal studies on feeding preferences and communication, as well as the Plastics Lab.
