Location:  Pacific Science Enterprise Centre (PSEC)

This program explores four important marine invertebrate phyla: Cnidaria, Mollusca, Arthropoda and Echinodermata. We begin with an introduction to phylogeny, and then split into smaller groups where students have the opportunity to meet our intertidal animals in person.  During the program, the phyla come to life through a combination of artifacts, squid dissection and live coastal marine invertebrates. Artifacts include an anemone model, snail shells and opercula, a preserved octopus and eggs, crab molts, barnacle shells, an urchin test, a sea star model, a turtle shell, coral samples and many engaging photos.

As we conclude our program, we will gather as a group to discuss challenges these animals and our oceans are facing. We will also brain storm as a group to find direct actions students can take to help affect change including the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup and Ocean Wise Sustainable Seafood.
