Dear Students,
Welcome to the Secondary Level Ocean Literacy Course on the Ocean Wise Online Learning Environment. This course explores the 7 key principles of Ocean Literacy - designed for secondary level students to develop an understanding of how we impact the ocean and how the ocean influences us.
This course will both teach you about many fascinating aspects of our ocean while arming you with the ability to help conserve one of the most beautiful, complex, and important parts of our earth.
For each section there is a Badge to earn. You should complete all associated assignments before you can take the Principle quiz and earn your badge. If you complete all 7 of the Ocean Literacy Principle badges you may take the Final Quiz and submit the Written Assignment to complete the course!
Dear Teachers,
Welcome to the Secondary School level Ocean Literacy Course on the Ocean Wise Online Learning Environment. On this platform we have created an international course based on 7 key principles designed to develop an understanding of how humans impact the ocean and how the ocean influences humans for secondary level students. This course is geared towards grades 10 to 12, or ages 15-18.
You may use these resources as you wish by choosing to do the full course or just a few of the sections. There is a How to Manual for navigating the site, as well as a video.
Under the heading Classroom Tools you will find additional support resources at your disposal such as lesson plans, activities and worksheets that can be accessed under Teacher Resources.

As a teacher, community leader, or home educator, you may join the platform first. This will allow you to view your students’ work and create accounts for students. Click Here and register using the code Teacher.
Students in the Middle School and Secondary level course may create their own accounts and profiles on the Ocean Literacy learning platform. We suggest having a general discussion with students about online privacy first, and ensuring they do not use their last names in their profiles to protect their privacy. To register, Click Here and use the code Student
If you click the Register button in the top right hand corner of the screen and create an account, this will automatically register you at the student level. If you are a teacher or educator and need to be promoted to the proper access level, please contact us with your username.

Break your plastic problem - help protect the ocean.
Microplastic is the greatest pollutant in the ocean today. It comes from our packaging, waste, clothing and is even specifically created to be tiny. These tiny plastics are a big problem.
Plastic is filling our oceans at the rate of one dump truck full every minute.
Tiny zooplankton that support the ocean food chain are mistaking plastic for food. Seabirds are found with plastic pieces in their bellies.
We need a sea change. Today.
Ocean Wise is tackling the global crisis of plastic waste in our ocean. We’re carrying out groundbreaking science to understand the problem and seeking bold solutions to address plastic pollution.
What happens next depends on you. Your individual actions and choices have a direct impact on the health of our oceans. Together, our individual actions can have a big collective impact. But we have to make that change happen. Join us in a global movement to #BePlasticWise and sign our pledge

The Volvo Ocean Race is often described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world, sailing’s toughest team challenge and one of the sport’s Big Three events, alongside the Olympics and America’s Cup. With 11 legs, sailing across the world, teams will battle the ocean, weather and tides to prove themselves the best in the world. This is also the perfect opportunity for students around the world to connect with the powerful message that VOR is sending - we are all responsible for the ocean.
VOR has developed a number of Educational Resources for teachers to utilize in coordination with the race. With sustainability at its heart, the Education team at VOR has created an interactive and wide variety of activities and lesson plans to connect students with sailing, sustainability and ocean plastics. Resources are available for ages 8 to 12, with worksheets, booklets, power point presentations and more. available for you to interact with your students.
This is is particularly special, as the United Nations has sent a team into the race. Turn the Tide on Ocean Plastics is sailing the message about marine plastics across the globe.

The 7 Key Principles which inspired this course come from the Ocean Literacy Framework. The framework, created by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), was developed by many scientists and educators from the ocean sciences education community. Their efforts built on previous work to define ocean literacy, assess what the public knows about the ocean, and redress the lack of ocean-related content in state and national science education standards, instructional materials, and assessments. Explore the Foundations section to learn about how the ocean sciences education community came together to create these documents and ignite a movement within ocean sciences and beyond.

For more video resources, you can visit our Aquatic Cafe. Aquatic Cafe is based around community outreach, providing educational opportunities for those looking to further their knowledge of all things ocean related. There are talks and movie viewings in the community, question and answer panels with experts in the field, and updates on current research happening right now. View the various videos to hear directly from experts about the challenges that the ocean is facing, as well as interesting career information or species highlights.
Coming soon we will have our Arctic Marine Life course available for the public. This course will discuss how animals in the arctic have adapted to living in such an extreme environment, and how they are connected through the food web. It will also discuss current research happening in the Arctic, as well as some very exciting species such as Beluga Whales and Greenland Sharks. This course is a fun, interactive way to expand your knowledge and learn about the incredible Arctic at the top of the world.
Also on its way is the BC Marine Life course, and online course to highlight the incredible creatures found in the waters of British Columbia, Canada, and the conservation surrounding their survival. Students will learn about everything from sea otters to sea anemones.
