According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were roughly 45 million immigrants in the United States, meaning that immigrants make up about 14 percent of the population. Nearly 90 million people—28 percent of the overall U.S. population—are immigrants or their U.S.-born children, according to the 2018 Current Population Survey and this number will only continue to increase over the next few years. Immigrants play a large role in America economics including farm work, factories and other labor intensive positions. By welcoming immigrants, we get an opportunity to view new cultures and diverse sustainable ideas with a fresh lens. In addition, most immigrants come from cultures that put emphasis on caring for the land and community, which provides more ways to create sustainable communities. Those that immigrated to a new country are looking for a safe place for their families and are willing to be more invested in its future. This special webinar with panelists Shiela DeForest (Mrs. Eco-International) and Ngozi Chukwueke (AmeriCorps CivicSpark Fellow & Brown Girl Green Intern) will take a unique look at why immigration is important to creating a sustainable future and reducing our climate impact from growing gardens at home to creating jobs in renewable energy. Immigration is generally good for, and part of, sustainable communities. It lends diversity, economic energy and a capacity for long term sustainable development.
This event is free and open to any person interested in sustainability and the environment and all are welcome to attend no matter where you are on your journey!
