Vancouver Aquarium Reflection

Feb 22, 2022 at 4:34 PM by Ethan

Hi friends,

Thank you all for joining us on our aquarium adventure over the weekend, we had an incredible time showing you folks around and introducing y'all to some animal pals. We hope you all had a great time and learned lots and maybe even feel inspired to do some volunteering. But, it is once again reflection time (if you are coming over from the snowshoeing reflection, I'm sorry you're gonna hear the shpeal again). I have several reflections questions/prompts to get you thinking about your experiences. As always, the only two requirements are to write in full sentences and to write a minimum of one paragraph (4 sentences).

  1. Which gallery was your favorite to walk through in the aquarium? Describe your feelings while walking through this gallery.
  2. What was the coolest thing that you learned about? What was the most memorable thing that you learned about during our excursion?
  3. Which phylum in the wetlab peaked your interest the most?
  4. Which animal in the wetlab was the most interesting to learn about and touch? What feelings or connections did you have while interacting with this animal?
  5. Is being an aquarist a career that interests you? Or a career in working with animals?
  6. Is there any questions about the wetlab/animals you wanted to ask but didn't get to? (Ethan will try to answer them)
  7. Free prompt

Visiting the Vancouver Aquarium with Youth to Sea was such an exciting experience. My favorite gallery was the amazon, it was super engaging as we walked through the tropical rainforest recreation and spotted the sloths hiding above us. I also really enjoyed learning about the teamwork used between two very different species to catch prey in the 4D octopus movie. I am thankful there is a space to offer rehabilitation to many of these animals such as the blind seal who was struck by a boat. Overall, the aquarium was a perfect space for a very enjoyable and educational excursion.

I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Vancouver Aquarium and exploring the various galleries there. I loved watching the penguins despite them being quite stationary. Although I didn't get to see them eating, I still enjoyed seeing them all huddled up in one spot, all staring up as if they were contemplating some important life decisions. Through this experience, I've wanted to volunteer at the aquarium, and learn more about the many fascinating creatures in the aquarium!

Being an aquarist combines the exploration of discovery with the comfort of science and fact while wearing an awesome red vest. Most people on the planet would love to play with seals and feed lobsters as a career, but my dream goes only slightly deeper. The smaller things I noticed, like gently cleaning tanks around swimming schools and lashing eels or honing the ability to point out a difficult-to-spot species named the wrinkle dogwinkle truly pulled me in. These techniques and habits fall in line with my favourite things; marine life, serene scenes, and collaboration. I deeply thank The Vancouver Aquarium for introducing me to the wonders and dilemmas of the planet's oceans at a young age and continuing to pique my interest in my young adult years. YouthToSea is known to deliver phenomenal experiences, and this one beats the rest!

Going to the Vancouver Aquarium with Youth to Sea was really fun and I hope to go there again sometime! It’s hard to say which gallery was my favourite so I’ll talk about all the different things I saw and learned that stood out. The first thing my group went to visit was the wet-labs and it was amazing. I held a variety of different organisms and was even stung (safely) by a sea anemone. I didn’t know that sea cucumbers were actually quite soft and squishy and being able to hold a beautiful budget sound crab was also a highlight of my day. After, we were able to watch a squid and fish dissection and there were many parts of the the organisms, especially the squid, that was really cool to see and learn about, one of which was the lenses in their eyes. Walking through the gallery and watching the 4D movie was so much fun as well! Seeing the jellyfish gracefully swim around and learning about the seals that being rehabilitated at the aquarium were other things that stood out to me during my visit. I really enjoyed looking, holding, and learning about the animals at the aquarium, and it makes me really excited to share the knowledge I gained with friends, other volunteer opportunities, and service projects. Because of this, I have become really interested in getting involved with the Aquarium, and I have started a volunteer position with a salmon hatchery Youth to Sea had introduced us to last year!
