Week 4 - Wednesday August 23rd

Hi YELP Leaders and Parents!

Today was a great 3rd day with the YELP program!

What did we do today?

  • We began our day by heading into the galleries for a Rockfish Abundance Survey. We counted all the species of Rockfish that we could find in the Treasures of BC Coast and Pacific Canada galleries and we learned about the difficulties that divers face when they do real surveys in the ocean.
  • Next, we led a Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup (GCSC) with the AquaCampers. YELPers did an awesome job at helping the kids understand what the GCSC is and how to safely collect garbage and play a part in saving our oceans!
  • After lunch, we got to sort and weigh all the garbage - we collected a total of 4 lbs of garbage!
  • We ended off the day by dissecting a spiny dogfish and identifying the different features on the inside and outside. We found eight dogfish embryos in our specimen!

Questions to ask your YELPers

  1. What species of Rockfish is the most abundant at the Aquarium?
  2. What was the most common piece of garbage found in the GCSC?
  3. Which parts of the spiny dogfish did you see in your dissection?

Thanks for another awesome day youth leaders!
