Hi YELP Leaders and Parents!
Thanks for another fin-tastic day!
What did we do today?
- We started off our day by a tour through the galleries to visit some of our rescued animals including the sea otters, harbor seals, and dolphins!
- Next the YELPers tackled the issue of microplastics and plastic waste. They came up with solutions on how to solve difficult and complex issues that our society is currently facing.
- After lunch we were visited by Tanya from the Aquarium's Green Team. She shared her experiences of living a plastic free life and how to lead a more environmentally-friendly life!
- At the end of the day, the leaders put their thinking caps on and were set the task of designing a research project with the guidance of guest speaker Dr. David Rosen, a UBC and Vancouver Aquarium Steller Sea Lion Researcher, to attempt to solve the current steller sea lion decline off the coast of Alaska! The YELP leaders had some great ideas!
Questions to ask your YELPers
- What animals that live at the Aquarium have been rescued and what are their rescue stories?
- What is a way that you can reduce your plastic waste?
- What are two possible reasons that the group came up with for the Steller Sea Lion decline?

Thanks for yet one more great day leaders! Remember that tomorrow is our field trip to the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre (MMR). Make sure to bring close-toed shoes and clothes that you are okay to get dirty!
