Hi! My name is Haley Wong and I am an eleventh grade student attending Britannia Secondary School. When I am not doing any homework, I am probably playing basketball, the piano, or Scrabble against opponents online.
1. The Rocky Mountains (Rockies) are North America’s largest mountain system
The Rocky Mountains are a breathtaking range of valleys and peaks that stretches for approximately 4,800km from northern British Columbia all the way down south to New Mexico in the United States.
The Canadian part of the Rockies is roughly 1,200 km from the American borders of BC and Alberta to the Liard River Basin.
The Rocky Mountains encompass at least 100 separate ranges that are divided into four broad groups: the Canadian Rockies, the Middle Rockies, the Southern Rockies, and the Colorado Plateau.
2. Mount Waddington is the highest peak in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia
Mount Waddington, once known as the Mystery Mountain was named after Alfred Waddington, who was involved in the colony of Vancouver Island, which later became the province of British Columbia.
Although named after Waddington, the 4,019 metre mountain was discovered by Don and Phyllis Munday.
3. Only half of Mount Garibaldi (volcano) still stands today
Around 13,000 years ago, Mount Garibaldi erupted and built a cone of volcanic rubble and ash.
On one side, the cone was built on a rock foundation while the remaining western side of the cone formed on top of a glacier.
When the ice melted, the western part of the mountain collapsed, leaving the remaining half of the mountain.
