My name is Samantha Haenel, I'm 16 years old and I've lived in Vancouver, British Columbia my entire life. I currently go to an alternative high school program that allows me to work at my own pace, because of this I'll be graduating a year early so I'm in my last year of high school.
I'm passionate about animals and art. In my home we house about 30 animals including reptiles, chickens, rabbits, a dog, a cat, axolotls, and more. I spend most of my free time researching and caring for my animals. When I'm not doing that, I'm normally drawing or painting, I've always loved to make art but recently I've discovered that I'm quite interested in the field of tattoo artistry. I am also in love with traveling, I've been on a half a month trip on the Yukon river, traveled to Europe and am considering going to Germany for post secondary.
Watershed
A watershed is a drainage basin in any area of land where precipitation collects and drains off into a common outlet, such as into a river, of any other body of water. A watershed carries water "shed" from the land after rain falls and snow melts No matter where you are, you are always standing in a watershed.
I live in the Strait if Georgia East Shore Watershed. Watersheds do not follow political boundaries and overlap the borders that have been placed by humans. This can cause conflict between governments that are connected in the watershed. In some situations, one of the governments will be actively involved in conserving the watershed while the other governments sharing the land that is the watershed may not want to participate, and will disregard possible conservation efforts. While the borders between provinces or states don't mean as much because they are within the same country, when there is a watershed that has international borders over it, it could cause more problems. If a conservation group wanted to cross over the border to work, it could become a legal problem with people traveling between countries.
Hopefully in the future, the governments that share a watershed will work together to conserve it, and not let the man-made borders affect their ability to protect this Earth.
