Hi YELP Leaders and Parents!

Today was a great 2nd day with the YELP program!

What did we do today?

  • We started off our day in the tropics gallery conducting scientific animal observations!
  • The leaders then embarked on an immersive 4D experience, and watched our newest 4D Show - Coastal Predators.
  • Afterwards, the leaders put their thinking caps on and were set the task of designing a research project with the guidance of guest speaker Dr. David Rosen, a UBC and Vancouver Aquarium Steller Sea Lion Researcher, to attempt to solve the current steller sea lion decline off the coast of Alaska! The YELP leaders had some great ideas!
  • Next, the YELPers leadership skills were put to the test. They were given the task of leading a Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup with our younger AquaCamp participants tomorrow, so they spent the afternoon planning tomorrow's GCSC! The leaders were very excited to plan their cleanup and are looking forward to leading their younger camp participants tomorrow!
  • To end our day, the YELPers experienced the wonders of our wet lab; they got up and close with animals!

Questions to ask your YELPers

  1. What animal did you spend time observing in the Tropics Gallery and what behaviours did you see them doing?
  2. What are two possible reasons the group came up with for the Steller Sea Lion decline?
  3. What are the three community habitats in the Wet Lab? What are characteristics that differentiate them?
