Hi YELP Leaders!!!

Thanks for a great trip to the Microplastics Lab and a great day!

What did we do today?

  • We started off our day by hopping on a bus and heading to the Microplastics Lab to learn more about the research that Ocean Wise is involved with. We got to separate microplastics from sediment, learn about cool ocean pollution research, and some of us got to extract our own DNA!
  • After our field trip we had lunch and then we got to dissect a ragfish! A ragfish is a very interesting fish that can be found 1000m below the surface of the ocean!
  • Post-dissection we quickly went onto the field for a fast but awesome game of "Chuck the Chicken"
  • The last part of the day was the Leaders maneuvering ROVs around our artificial salmon stream!

Questions to ask YELPers

  1. How do researchers try to determine the fathers of killer whales?
  2. What adaptations do ragfish have to survive in their environment?
  3. What are three reasons we use ROVs to explore the deepest parts of our ocean?

Thanks for yet one more great day leaders! Remember that tomorrow is our field trip to the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre (MMR). Make sure to bring close-toed shoes and clothes that you are okay to get dirty! Also, make sure to bring a lunch as we won't be able to food on our field trip!
