Week 3: Friday August 18th

Hello YELP leaders!!

Today was our on-site experience day! Here's a refresher on what we did:

  • Once everyone assembled, we got on a shuttle bus to our location, the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre!
  • Then we split the team into two groups and switched afterwards!
    • We got a guided tour through MMR and learned about how the staff and volunteers work to bring the mammals back to health
    • We also experienced what a day at MMR would look like- sorting things, helping spray down tubs, and cleaning up!
    • The seals and sea lions were absolute adorable!
    • While the other group was in MMR, the other group got to reflect on their week here at YELP. We finished our Social Media Project, Ocean Personal Meaning Map, and made thank you cards for all the people that talked to us and taught us about lots of things this week!

Note: We will have pictures from the whole week uploaded next week, so keep checking back! Just a note on photos from MMR, as they are behind the scenes, we ask that you keep them private and not share them on social media :) Thanks!

Questions:

  1. How many different marine mammal species are currently at MMR?
  2. What is the coolest thing you learned this week?
  3. How can you change your daily routine to help save our oceans?
  4. What are your squishies and pricklies for the week?

Thanks for such an awesome week, youth leaders! Your enthusiasm for ocean life and eagerness to help conservation efforts were a-ray-zing!! We can't wait to see what the future holds for all of you, and maybe see some of you around as volunteers and someday staff here with us! Hope you all have a super rest of the summer.
