Hello YELP leaders and parents!

We had an amazing day, packed with learning, activities and workshops! It was great to see the leaders become more confident and comfortable with one another today.

What we did today:

  • We had a free exploration of the Vancouver Aquarium galleries to kick off our day! We visited Vortex, Treasures of BC Coast, and more!
  • The YELPers played some fun leadership games, developing crucial teamwork and communication skills!
  • We introduced the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, as the YELPers will lead the younger camps tomorrow on a beach cleanup of Devonian Harbour. We spent some time going over safety, the 'why' for the clean up, and organizing roles for tomorrow.
  • Dave Rosen, the Senior Marine Mammal Researcher, came and gave a talk on the decline of Steller sea lions and the role of the scientist in investigating the issue.
  • The Mobile Programs team came in and touched base with our group with their projects. Our group used their creativity to further develop and expand the ideas they had for effectively communicating ocean science to younger audiences.

Questions to ask:

  • How can we incorporate scientific thinking in to our personal lives?
  • How can we better engage children and youth regarding ocean conservation issues?

Thanks again for a Fin-tastic day at YELP and looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

- Jay
