It's that time of year!
The turtle eggs that we have here at the centre are now starting to hatch! While running a private tour last week, a baby snapping turtle hatched right out of the egg in front of our eyes. It was so special for the family and for us! Did you know that with some species of turtles, the temperature determines the gender? The warmer the temperture, the more likely they will be female, the lower means more males. With Snapping turtles, we do a 50/50 ratio, as the centre admits both male and females fairly often. When hatclings come out of the egg they have something called an egg-tooth, this assists the hatchling in breaking the egg! While Snapping turtles can lay up to 70 eggs, the survival rate is only 0.07%. It takes about 60 years for an adult snapping turtle to leave behind one baby that will make it to adulthood. That is why what OTCC does is so so important! Every turtle counts, every turtle rescue makes a difference. All I can say is I love it here!

That's one heck of a generational gap, wow. I love that they also have egg teeth - until now, I'd only ever heard of them on birds (and dinosaurs, same difference). Amazing work helping to protect the turtles!
This is amazing!!
