Science Communication Skills Training for Northern Ontario STEMM faculty and researchers - delivered by @LUSciComm, supported by NSERC.

About this event

The Science Communication Graduate Program, jointly offered by Laurentian University and Science North, has delivered comprehensive Sci Comm training to science graduates, working professionals, and academic audiences since 2005. Supported by an NSERC Science Communication Skills Training Pilot Grant, the program invites researchers and faculty members from across Northern Ontario to participate in an intensive professional development workshop in August 2021. Registration is free, capped at 60 participants, and closes on July 9th.

This workshop is custom-built to cater to the needs and experiences of science professionals working in Northern Ontario, with the ultimate goals of:

  • Building science communication capacity across Northern Ontario through training grounded in evidence-based strategies for effective and impactful engagement
  • Equipping participants with a toolkit of approaches and activities to enable them to pass their knowledge on to students, staff, and peers
  • Building a collaborative culture by connecting participants with each other and with science communicators in science centres, museums, and outreach organizations in their local communities

This workshop is open to STEMM (science, technology, engineering, math, medicine) faculty, researchers, lab managers and technicians, PhD students, and postdoctoral fellows working at post-secondary institutions and research centres across Northern Ontario. Workshop materials and delivery will be in English, and discussion questions are welcome in French.

The interactive workshop will be delivered remotely, making use of breakout rooms and collaborative editable documents to facilitate activities. Participants will receive a workbook in the mail prior to the event, which will contain hard copies of key messages, learning objectives, templates, and planning guides for use following the training.
