Program Schedule

Description

Day 1: October 10th

Arrival at 7:00pm at the Vancouver Aquarium. The evening will begin with check in, introductions, expectations, and some icebreaker games to get to know the other participants. We will learn about the Squamish River watershed, and how water flow between mountains and oceans plays a key role in all landscapes, organisms, land use that we will see on our journey. At 8:00pm, we will begin our sleepover program at the Vancouver Aquarium. We will learn about the role of water in three separate ecosystems, and how this water connects them together. This will start us off in our journey to understand how everything is connected! Program will involve a late night snack.

Day 2: October 11th

We will eat breakfast, then leave the Aquarium and head to the Pacific Science Enterprise Center in West Vancouver. This is the hub for all things Ocean Wise Research! We will get an exclusive behind the scenes look at some of the ongoing research projects, and how they help us understand our role in our local ecosystems. We were originally scheduled to visit the Sea to Sky Gondola for lunch and a guided tour, but due to the recent lift incident, we are unable to partake in these activities. Our research team from Ocean Watch has graciously offered to lead the group on a guided hike along the Sea to Sky corridor to discuss a few ocean issues within the Howe Sound..  We will arrive at the Cheakamus Centre for dinner, solo reflection activities, and a night in the longhouse!

Day 3: October 12th

We will spend the entire day at the Cheakamus Centre. Programming will focus on making environmental connections, habitat conservation, First Nations culture, and leadership sessions on awareness, education and action. All meals are included, and we end with another night in the longhouse.

Day 4: October 13th

We will pack up from the Cheakamus Centre and make our way back down the river via white water rafting! The Squamish Rafting Company will guide us along the Cheakamus River to the Squamish Estuary as we experience the water flow from mountains and glaciers to streams, rivers, estuaries, and eventually to the ocean. A hot lunch will be provided during the rafting expedition. After rafting, we will bus back to the Vancouver Aquarium for a program debrief and reflection, ending the program at 5:00pm.
