Salmon are an incredibly important species to British Columbia. Unfortunately, their populations are decreasing. The Capilano River Hatchery was built in 1971 to support the salmon population after the Cleveland Dam was built. The hatchery is still functioning to this day and has had a major impact in replenishing the number of salmon in this area. The hatchery also has a fish ladder which helps returning adult salmon avoid the dam . I took this photo in October 2019 when I went to see the adult chinook salmon return to the Capilano River to spawn. They are truly determined animals!
