In times of social distancing, the coasts and oceans offer a refuge from indoor reclusion. As we have become so used to fabricated certainty, the sudden unpredictability that these times bring can be intimidating. Apparent stillness shaken by change. But while looking at the waves crashing against the rocky shores from the safety of the land, I think to myself: what is the ocean but this massive body of salt water thriving in uncertainty while being reshaped by millennia of change? We can either look at the ocean as a master of continental isolation, holding land masses apart, or we can see it as a bridge connecting us all, both literally as we navigate through its waterways and figuratively as we see our own vulnerability reflected in its water mirror. The oceans offer us a reminder that we, too, can be resilient in the face of change.
