Normally by this time in spring, I would have already been on my first portage trip of the year, typically in Algonquin before the bugs become unbearable. I'm very grateful to have access to a kayak and a car so I can paddle over to the Toronto Islands for what feels like a mini-camping day. On a beautiful afternoon like this, the island would typically be quite packed with beach bums but since the ferries aren't running, the beach was empty and nearly garbage free.
