Below is a really incredible opportunity to apply for the Young Professionals Committee ahead of IMPAC5 (5th International Marine Protected Areas Congress) set for June 2022 in Vancouver. A couple of things to highlight that really make this opportunity stand out:
- The co-lead for the committee is Caroline Merner, an original staff member for Ocean Bridge back in 2018 – she's truly an amazing person and a compassionate leader, anyone who has worked alongside her can attest to that!

Responsibility

- Provide recommendations on sessions, speakers, ceremonies, and field trips;
- Showcase global youth engagement on marine protected areas (MPAs); and
- Engage youth through IMPAC5-related events and activities.
Opportunity
As a Young Professionals Committee member for IMPAC5, you can:
- Mobilize youth around the world on the importance of MPAs
- Attend the high profile international congress for in-person and digital events with a global community of marine conservation practitioners.
- Share your expertise and experiences to develop a roadmap for youth engagement in MPAs and ocean conservation.
- Plan the legacy of future engagement for IMPAC6 and beyond.
- Receive a stipend as an honorarium for your engagement efforts.
Experience and Abilities
As a Young Professionals Committee member for IMPAC5, you have:
- Worked in a field related to ocean conservation, marine protected areas, Indigenous rights, biodiversity, climate change, industry, transportation, or other related fields.
- Developed youth outreach and engagement strategies at a local, national or global level.
- Designed youth events/workshops/meeting programs or agendas, including developing themes and outlining speakers/guests.

Opportunity 1: Apply to join Ocean Wise’s Ocean & Climate Literacy Strategic Planning Team!
Ocean Wise is developing an Ocean & Climate Literacy strategy and we are looking for nine Ocean Bridge ambassadors or alumni to join us! As a member of the Ocean & Climate Literacy planning team, you will help identify and craft the strategic pathways that will guide the next five years of Ocean Wise’s work in Ocean & Climate Literacy. In addition to influencing the future of Ocean & Climate Literacy, this opportunity will give you hands-on experience in the strategic planning process from defining clear goals, to determining strategies for success and designing projects to meet the identified objectives. You will learn from leaders in conservation strategic planning, Foundations of Success, as the guide Ocean Wise’s strategic planning team for Ocean and Climate Literacy. Foundations of Success is a non-profit organization with the goal of improving the practice of conservation by working with practitioners to develop and communicated tested knowledge about what works, what does not, and why.
So what is commitment? You will need to be available to join and actively participate in all of the following virtual sessions (all times PST):

Communications, Outreach & Events Coordinator– The OATHE Project
Who We Are: The OATHE Project is a brand-new environmental non-profit, that encourages people to engage in small-scale acts of change that may individually seem insignificant but can collectively make massive impact.
OATHE itself is an acronym that stands for “One Act at a Time to Help the Earth.” And our project aims to leverage the power of technology and social media to spread the message that the environmental challenges of our time require all of us to do our parts. What does this mean? In addition to major structural shifts that must happen at an institutional level, individual mindsets/ behaviors also need to change. Hence, our campaigns have two goals: First, to educate the public about certain environmental issues. And second, to have them #TaketheOATHE and commit to singular action steps on a regular basis, that may seem small, but can collectively make global impact.
For this year, our environmental issue of focus has been ocean pollution. And our OATHE is to pick up one piece of litter each day and commit to reducing plastic waste. So far, we’ve had hundreds share in the pledge, and at least a dozen clean-ups have been organized since June. The goal? Get 2,021 pledgees for the #TrashBeGone campaign this year, which would mean a collective diversion of 42 tons of garbage and 7.5 million pieces of plastic waste.

Who We Are Looking For: A social media whiz who’s as passionate about environmental change as we are! Our ideal candidate will be very good with technology, creative in how they design their content, data-driven in their approach and open about sharing ideas to improve our young non-profit. They will also help with our community outreach beyond social media, from organizing virtual events like a hackathon being planned for February 2021, to planning educational workshops, to recruiting volunteers, to finding partners for future projects, and more.
Eligibility:
• Applicant must be a full-time or part-time student at a Canadian post-secondary educational institution.
• They must also be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a refugee under whom refugee protection
has been conferred, under Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
• They must be legally entitled to work in Canada according to the relevant provincial legislation.
• And they must be willing to comply with all other relevant eligibility checks and paperwork required of
our funding partners at the Student Work Placement Program (SWPP).
Rate of Pay: $16 per hour, for 15 hours a week, running 12 weeks starting February 1st, 2020
Work Location: The OATHE Project is a global initiative, but is formally incorporated in Halifax NS, Canada. That
said, all work for Winter 2021 (including events) will be done remotely and at home, due to the circumstances
surrounding COVID-19. This means that applicants from across Canada are encouraged to apply.

Youthful Cities in partnership with RBC Future Launch and Impact Hub would like to hear from young people in order to better understand their concerns and suggestions for possible solutions at the municipal level. We are therefore organizing a hackathon, an ideation event focusing on conceptualisation, collaboration, and solution-making, with the aim of making cities healthier for young people during and after the COVID-19 crisis. We are starting with the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau!
If you are a young person (18 to 29 years old) who has lived or currently lives in the National Capital Region, you are invited to submit your application to participate in this hackathon! We would like to hear about your experiences and your ideas for making Ottawa-Gatineau resilient cities that are attentive to their young population. Ocean Bridge connects Canadian youth from coast to coast to coast empowering them to make a difference towards ocean conservation. Each year 160 youth (ages 18-30) form a national team engaged in co-creating and delivering service projects for their home communities and two immersive learning journeys addressing Ocean Health and Ocean Literacy in Canada. The youth are separated into four cohorts of 40, each focused on one of these important marine areas in Canada: the Pacific, the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence and the Atlantic.
Ocean Bridge youth are empowered to make a difference towards ocean conservation through three program elements:
- Community & Capacity Building
- Ocean Health Wilderness Learning Journey
- Ocean Literacy Urban Learning Journey

Threading Water: Betty Carpick – Artist at work

Thunder Bay-based artist Betty Carpick puts the finishing touches on a year-long project that began when the 40 youth from across Canada in the 2019 cohort met for the first time along the north shore of Lake Superior this past summer. The artist will be set up and working in the rotunda of the Canadian Museum of Nature in downtown Ottawa.
“The Great Bear Rainforest”: Free Documentary Screening, Panel and Networking Event
7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. / Canadian Museum of History
Journey to a land of grizzlies, coastal wolves, sea otters and the all-white spirit bear — the rarest bear on earth — in the film “Great Bear Rainforest”. Experience this magical world in IMAX at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau. This event is organized by Ocean Wise's Ocean Bridge cohort in collaboration with Pacific Wild. It is completely free to the public but individuals must reserve their seats. As an organization made up of young ocean conservationists, Ocean Bridge is tasked with engaging other Canadian youth. An exciting and unique networking event, Ocean Bridge’s Living Library is a form of dialogue that brings together experts from various fields to participate as “books” and encourages “readers” to engage in the vast array of topics that the library’s “books” have expertise and experience in. Guest speaker will be Mia Otokiak, an Ocean Bridge participant from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. Light snacks will be served and beverages will be available for purchase. Youth Climate Lab and CC-IUCN Engagement
Ocean Bridge youth ocean ambassadors will have the chance to participate in a Youth Climate Lab workshop and take part in the Canadian Committee of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (CC-IUCN) annual general meeting at the Museum of Nature, which will bring together some of the leading voices in the world of conservation in Canada.

Ocean Bridge at the 2019 Canadian Parks Conference in Québec City!
Posted by benjaminaube1 on 22 Oct 2019Ocean Wise was proud to be represented by a trio of Ocean Bridge youth ambassadors at the 2019 Canadian Parks Conference in Québec City from October 7-10! The team of Marie-Philippe Ouellet, Ariane Marchand and Shawn Gauthier had the chance to connect with other #NatureForAll Youth Champions, discuss the present and future of our parks and brainstorm solutions for bringing the youth voice to the table. See some of the pictures below from their trip – way to go Shawn, MP and Ariane!
The future of the planet we love is in the midst of a turning point, but there are many opportunities to have our voices heard on the horizon. #NatureForAll, a global movement to inspire a love for and in nature created at the 2016 International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) World Conservation Congress, is hoping Canadian young people like yourselves will help amplify the youth voice at these events.
#NatureForAll Youth Champions will connect young people who are curious about, or already involved in nature conservation with each other, and it will provide them real access and engagement opportunities at upcoming conservation events, including the 2020 IUCN World Conservation Congress, and beyond!

Making a splash at 24th World Scouts Jamboree in West Virginia
Posted by benjaminaube1 on 12 Aug 2019Ocean Bridge had the good fortune of teaming up with Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup last month as they hit the road for the 24th World Scouts Jamboree at Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia!
Huge kudos go out to current Ocean Bridge cohort member Cyrielle Noël and GCSC educator Connor Thompson, who led the charge in delivering two days of interactive workshops and discussions about ocean health in a large pavilion set up by our friends and partners at #NatureForAll and IUCN . Over the course of two "Oceans Days" in the pavilion, around 1,000 youth from at least 30 different countries took part in Ocean Wise's workshops and discussions, each receiving badges for their efforts! With older group leaders and educators, we were also able to discuss Ocean Wise's Online Education tools and digital classrooms.
An overwhelming majority of the young scouts who took part in our workshops were quite engaged and interested – a tribute to our wonderful educators! More than a few lingered around our table after the experiments to talk about water and ocean issues important to them in their communities, and what they can do about it.
And while she couldn't attend the Jamboree, a HUGE shout-out goes out to Ocean Bridge alum Hannah Kosick, who played a key role in planning and supporting the workshops and the trip. We couldn't have done it without you, Hannah!
Of course we can't go without mentioning other #NatureForAll organizations – the Canadian Wildlife Federation, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, and Parks Canada – who led amazing workshops for Wildlife Days, Forestry Days and Parks Days, respectively.
#NatureForAll is a global movement to inspire a love of nature. This is accomplished by bringing together like-minded organizations, encouraging people of all ages to find ways to connect with nature, and by presenting the scientific evidence and facts about why nature is beneficial to us all.
Hey ocean lovers! We got the inside scoop that Canadian Geographic's VERY cool 10,000 Changes project will officially be launching next week. They would love to have some Ocean Bridge alumni or current participants take part!
10,000 Changes was created in partnership with Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Recycling Council of Ontario, and Strut Creative as a way to inform and motivate individual Canadians to take action on the problem of plastic pollution and champion solutions within communities, businesses and organizations across Canada.
One of the ways they're engaging individual Canadians is by getting them to make commitments to rethink their consumption of single-use plastics. This section of the site is not live yet, but making a commitment will be as easy as clicking on a tile and writing in a statement like "I commit to bringing a reusable bottle with me on the go" or "I commit to saying no to single-use straws."
Other Canadians will then be able to select the "Commitments" that best suit them and add them to a virtual "Shopping Cart" of sorts that they'll be able to customize for themselves – a really cool idea!
To help spread the program's messages and calls to action far and wide, CanGeo is looking for early adopters to make commitments, and then share those commitments with their social media and professional networks. They're also looking for people who are willing to make a short video talking about their commitments and encouraging others to sign on to the program.

2020 Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference
April 19-22, 2020 - Vancouver, B.C.
Deadline for Submissions is July 12, 2019
The Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference brings together scientists, researchers, decision-makers, managers and knowledge-holders from First Nations and Tribes, agencies, community organizations, businesses, non-governmental organizations, and academia. Participants present the latest scientific research on the state of the ecosystem, share information about the application of knowledge from science and other sources, and guide future actions for protecting and restoring the Salish Sea Ecosystem.
The theme for this year's meeting is "Shared Knowledge for the Future." An important aim of this meeting is to work toward strategies for recovery and management that integrate across cultures, disciplines, and boundaries, and bring knowledge to action.
To this end, the conference conveners are calling for session proposals from the Salish Sea community. Sessions are groups of presentations that are organized around a unified topic. Each session is scheduled for 1½ hours and includes a collection of presentations.
Given the multi-sector nature of the conference, and in consideration of the issues we face, proposals that are applicable and engaging to the wide range of participants are encouraged.

Applications are open for the 2019 Our Ocean conferences in Oslo, Norway!
The Our Ocean conferences were initiated by Secretary of State John Kerry in 2014, with the aim to put oceans on the foreign policy agenda, and create a platform where leaders from government, business and civil society meet on an equal footing to promote action and innovation for clean, healthy and productive oceans. The Oslo conference will highlight the importance of knowledge as the basis of our actions and policies to ensure sustainable future economic growth. It will emphasize integrated management of sea and coastal areas as the key to protection and sustainable use of the oceans.
The intended theme for the Our Ocean Youth Leadership Summit is “Co-creating the Sustainable Blue Economy”. Following Norway’s global leadership in integrated ocean management, the summit programming will intend to inspire, inform, and empower participants to build holistic solutions that better balance the needs of society, industry and the ocean environment.
The conference is seeking problem solvers and sustainability champions below 35 years old to describe their interest and/or engagement in sustainability (this could be a project idea, an organization, or an initiative you are currently involved with or wish to explore) to submit their application online before July 5, 2019 11:59pm PST. 100 participants from over 50 countries will receive one complimentary guest pass to participate in the bootcamp and scholarship*.

Presented by the Privy Council Office, the Canada Youth Summit Video Challenge is for young Canadians between the age of majority in their home province or territory and 24 years old. Candidates are invited to share a video no longer than one (1) minute on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram using #InspiredToServe and #inspiréÀservir.
The video should respond to the following question:
What does service mean to you? How has service benefited you personally and professionally, as well as your community?
Participants must ensure they have read through and agree with the Official Challenge Rules and Regulations before submitting their video entry.
Four prizes will be awarded through random draw. The Privy Council Office will provide each winner with:
- Economy travel from their home to join youth from across the country at the Canada Youth Summit in Ottawa, Ontario, to take place May 2 and 3, 2019.
- Accommodations and meals will be paid for during the duration of the trip at the standard National Joint Council rates.
- Winner’s videos will be played at the Canada Youth Summit in a “Social Media Room” periodically through the two-day event.
Each winner will be required to complete and sign a “Canada Youth Summit Code of Conduct”; a “Disclosure of Personal Information, Privacy Notice, and Consent” form; and an “Emergency Contact Form” in order to receive their prize. Documents will be sent in an email to winners.

The 2019 Ocean Heroes Bootcamp will be taking place from June 28 – 30 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The three-day camp empowers existing and emerging youth leaders (aged 11-18) to create their own campaigns to take action against ocean plastic pollution. These could be the Ocean Bridgers of the future!
Here’s where you can come in: Ocean Heroes will be launching a Mentor Program. It’s not running quite yet, but it will be listed on its main page in the “Idea Incubation” section.

The Nautical Library: a night of ocean autobiographies
6:00 p.m. – 9 p.m.
The Nautical Library: A Night of Ocean Autobiographies will be an evening of ocean optimism and knowledge exchange at the Vancouver Aquarium where talented and diverse storytellers will form a human library. Open to aspiring leaders and ocean lovers, this event will offer participants a chance to read each member’s “book cover” to find a person they would like to borrow for an enriching conversation.

Friday Oct. 12
AquaVan Takeover
10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Ocean Bridge youth will take over the Ocean Wise AquaVan, offering hands-on interaction with sea creatures and artifacts at Greater Vancouver schools. Inspired by their remote shoreline cleanup experience in Haida Gwaii, Ocean Bridge youth have created a program to share their story.
Parlons Océans
6 – 9 p.m.
At Parlons océans, the youth will play a screening of the documentary “Le plastique menace sur les océans,” then host ocean trivia and discussions. This event will be hosted in French and is open to ages 15+. More details here.
Saturday Oct. 13
Seawall Plog-a-thon
9:30 a.m. – Noon
Ocean Bridge youth will be hosting a plogathon — where participants will jog while picking up litter — around Stanley Park. This Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup event will begin and end at the Aquarium. More details here.
Ocean Health Fair
10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
The Ocean Health Fair will take place on the Aquarium Plaza and feature hands-on stations with artifacts, ocean art activities for children, tips and tricks on living a reduced-waste lifestyle, ocean games as well as upcycling art activities. The AquaVan will also be offering an opportunity to get up-close and interactive with marine life. More details here.
Ocean Arcade
1:30 – 5 p.m.
In partnership with Canada Learning Code, Ocean Bridge youth will guide participants (children ages 8-13 and their parents) in a workshop environment – targeted at beginner coders – while they identify an ocean issue and build a game around it. More details here.
Promenades sur l'eau
6 – 11 p.m.
Promenades sur l'eau/Walks on Water fashion show will showcase six Canadian designers who are inspired by the ocean and are using materials that are sustainably and ethically sourced. This public event is $10 ($5 for students) and tickets can be purchased here.
Sunday Oct. 14
Daytime: During this event for Ocean Bridge youth only, Crista Valentino of CoalitionWild will be leading workshops on turning ideas into action as it relates to local impact in the global context and Haida elder Barbara Wilson will reconnect with group.
Monday Oct. 15
Ocean Literacy through an Indigenous Lens
9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
In this session focusing on ocean literacy through an Indigenous lens, a group of Ocean Bridge youth will work with two elementary school classes from Surrey, travelling to Port Moody where they will go on a voyageur canoe with Takaya Tours.
AquaVan Takeover
10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Ocean Bridge youth will take over the Ocean Wise AquaVan for a second time, offering hands-on interaction with sea creatures and artifacts at Greater Vancouver schools. Ocean Art Installations
10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Two art installations created by the Ocean Bridge youth will be displayed at the Vancouver Aquarium. One is a visual demonstrating the service work the cohort has engaged in throughout the year and the second is a national art project highlighting what the ocean means to Canadians from coast to coast to coast.
Ocean Bridge Outreach
10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The Ocean Bridge youth be present at the Vancouver Aquarium to interact with visitors and share their personal experiences from this past year.
The youth organizing these events have worked alongside the Indigenous Perspectives group, a sub-committee within Ocean Bridge that ensures Indigenous issues and culture are embedded into the programming and messaging.

Take a team of youth leaders passionate about protecting the ocean and what do you get? Ocean Bridge! Led by Ocean Wise, in partnership with the Government of Canada’s Canada Service Corps, Ocean Bridge gives young environmental leaders the chance to develop community service projects locally and as a team. In May 2018, the first Ocean Bridge cohort met in Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, to share ideas about conservation and lead service projects to improve ocean literacy and ocean health.

This webinar aims to both highlight the importance of the ocean in the way it affects human health, even in landlocked provinces, share the basics on how to assess if an ocean is healthy and ways to incorporate all of this into company health policies and environmental assessment reports.

- Turned the calendar into two different calendars: Tasks and Events
Tasks is where the facilitation team will post National Calls, timeline for action items, and anything other "deadlines" for Ocean Bridge team members.
Events is where we will post Ocean related events, workshops, conferences happening across the country (and beyond) as well as any public ocean service activities led by Ocean Bridge team members. Unfortunately only facilitators can add to the calendar, so if you have something to add just send us a link or description! - We have added three new discussion threads: (1) Recommended Reading List (for those of you that are interested); (2) Meaningful Service or Voluntourism? (this is a discussion I would love to see among the group both for your learning and to advise Ocean Bridges program development); and (3) Connecting Land-locked Communities to Oceans you land-locked folks pondering this.
- We created an Ocean Service Map
This is for us to keep track (and show off) all your great Ocean Service projects across the country. We ask that for each event or service project you:- Post a pin showing where the activity took place
- Provide information on how many hours you contributed (including planning) for that activity, how many other people (there are three age categories, provide your best guess) participated and the estimated hours they contributed (i.e. if you had 5 peers help out for one hour, then the contribution would be 5hrs).
- Provide a brief description of the activity
- If possible include a photo :)

You want to change the world. We’re here to help. Young Champions of the Earth aims to celebrate and support individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 who have outstanding potential to create positive environmental impact. In 2018, seven young people – selected from every global region – will be named Young Champions of the Earth. These winners receive seed funding, intensive training, and tailored mentorship to help them bring their big environmental ideas to life. Whose big idea will change the world? Following an open call for applications, UN experts will short-list 35 Regional Finalists who will be subjected to an online public vote, informing the selection of 14 World Finalists. A Global Jury will then select the seven 2018 winners. Each winner will be expected to implement their big idea and keep us updated on their progress by producing videos and blogs that we will share on our website. In parallel, up to 50 of the most promising applicants will be granted privileged access to an expert community of Covestro mentors offering insights on topics ranging from communications and business development to project planning and financial management.

G7 Oceans Youth Innovation Challenge
What is your vision for healthy and productive oceans in 2050?
What innovative solutions would you recommend be adopted to reach this goal?
We are calling all G7 youth who are 18-25 years old and have reached the age of majority in their country or province (Canada) to submit a 2-minute video sharing their innovative solutions to challenges facing global ocean health.
Judged by an international panel of ocean policy experts, the winners will be mentored and will be able to join the G7 Environment Ministerial meetings in Canada in the fall.

We are excited to see your solutions to global ocean health challenges!
Description: Watching TV or browsing social media we are constantly bombarded with facts and statistics about climate change, the environment and what we should to do to reduce our environmental impact. These seem to change from day to day, so it can seem impossible to know what is really going on. This lecture will demonstrate how some of these statistics and facts are obtained and how you can use scientific critical thinking to decide how reliable they are. Everyone is welcome, whether you have never taken a science class or just want to learn some skills to improve your critical thinking.
Speaker: Dr. Ruth Sharpe | Ruth is the Public Programs Manager at Ocean Wise. She earned her PhD in Zoology from the University of British Columbia in August 2017 and is a passionate science communicator.
Location: The Vancouver Aquarium but This event also will be livestreamed on The Vancouver Aquarium YouTube Channel!
