For over 5 years, the Squamish Streamkeepers have been silently putting out nets along docks that act as an artificial spawning substrate similar to kelp. Like ninjas in the night, herring have been spawning in False Creek on these nets for the past few years, right under everyone's noses. Herring, to my knowledge, haven't been observed spawning anywhere else in the Metro Vancouver area except for Squamish. Why are they going to False Creek? Nobody knows. This year I helped the streamkeepers put nets out and got some good footage of herring schools and eggs in False Creek. This picture is from mid-March 2019.
