The Ocean Wise Seafood (OWS) program is a conservation program that started at the Vancouver Aquarium in 2005 to educate consumers and businesses about sustainable seafood. Now with over 750 partners and 3,000 partner locations across the country, the program partners with restaurants, suppliers, producers, and retailers of seafood to indicate ocean-friendly seafood choices using the Ocean Wise Seafood label. OWS has staff in Vancouver, Toronto, Quebec, and Halifax and we work with business partners and stakeholders across the country and beyond.

Rachel brings diverse academic and professional experience to her role with the Ocean Wise Seafood team. She has research experience ranging from large scale ecosystem impacts to commercial and recreational fisheries management, and life history and population dynamics modelling for species worldwide, including the Northwest Atlantic and Pacific Northwest. Rachel is currently completing her PhD in Zoology, specializing in fisheries science at the University of British Columbia. She completed her MSc. at the University of British Columbia and her BSc. Honours in marine biology at Dalhousie University. Rachel also has experience as a fisheries scientist with the British Columbia Ministry of Environment, Freshwater Fisheries Society of British Columbia (working on various projects relating to salmon life history and small lake fisheries in British Columbia), as well as with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Fishermen’s and Friends Research Society (researching lobster and sea urchin).

Having grown up in the island nation of Japan, the oceans have always been a big interest for Shiori. In fact, her ocean-obsessed parents gave her her name to mean “Home of the Tides”. With a great passion for protecting our natural environment, she came to Canada to study Natural Resource Conservation at UBC. She got involved in student sustainability initiatives on campus and various volunteer roles in environmental non-profit organizations, including the Vancouver Aquarium and the Ocean Wise Seafood Program. After finishing her undergraduate degree, she worked for an environmental education non-profit organization in Vancouver where she expanded her experiences in community education. She is passionate about community, sustainability, and connecting people to where their food comes from, and is excited to promote sustainable seafood in her new role as Accounts Coordinator.
